MMU Iskandar EduCity to offer cinematic arts degree

MULTIMEDIA University (MMU), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Telekom Malay-sia Bhd, recently signed a consultancy agreement with the University of Southern California (USC) School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) to offer a Bachelor's degree in cinematic arts at the new MMU campus in Iskandar EduCity.

MMU chairman Datuk Dr Halim Shafie said the decision to offer the cinematic arts programme was made after an extensive study of the regional creative industry.
"The study revealed several talent gaps and the lack of highly-skilled creative employees.

"The cinematic arts programme is designed to address these gaps and produce highly-skilled graduates in film and television," he said in a press conference recently.

USC is home to one of the most recognised and prestigious film programmes.

Halim said MMU was honoured to  be working with the SCA team for the development of cinematic arts degree under  MMU's Faculty of Creative Multimedia.

"The  USC School of Cinematic Arts is touted as one of the best programmes for an aspiring film maker," he said.

"I have no doubt that they will help nurture our future creative and innovative screenwriters, film directors and producers, contributing towards the development of a hi-tech creative film industry in Malaysia."

The degree is considered an innovative and flexible degree that enables students to explore a range of cinematic arts from an Asia-World-Wide perspective.

Over the course of the three-year study, students will have the opportunity to write and produce individual and group projects.  This will ensure  that they graduate with tangible proof of their skills.

As MMU is close to Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios, students will be able to study first-hand the cinematic industry at work, and gaining an insider's experience before graduation.

The degree programme will be housed in a new facility with purpose-built studio and post-production facilities.

The MMU campus in EduCity will open its doors in June 2014, and will be located within the Multi-Varsity Enterprise Building at EduCity.

Students who are keen to enrol for the course can start with cinematic arts foundation programme, which will be offered at the Cyberjaya campus for the June 2012  intake.

The first student group will then  continue their bachelor's programme at the new EduCity in 2014.
