> African Internet syndicates, known as the “African Scam”, are now using a new modus operandi hacking into the e-mail accounts of international companies to steal customer information before pretending to be the companies, reported Harian Metro.
Customers are then asked to make payments to a new account using a Malaysian name before transferring the money to the bank accounts of the syndicates.
Their new tactic is to use the country as a hub to collect money by cheating clients of these international companies worldwide.
The newspaper said Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigations Department had detected six cases since January involving many international companies, including from Italy, United States and Indonesia, which had suffered millions in losses.
CCID Cyber and Multimedia Investigation Division assistant director Asst Comm Kamarudin Din said the syndicates also intercepted company e-mail to steal information.
