NCER to include 'Greater Kamunting' (2 PICS)

The state’s region for the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) will be further extended by including Kamunting.

Currently, the NCER in Perak encompassed only Hulu Perak, Kerian, Kuala Kangsar and Larut-Matang-Selama areas.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had given the nod for a study to be carried out on the matter.

“In fact, the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) has started a preliminary study on it already,” he said.

Speaking to reporters recently after performing a ground-breaking ceremony for a new road linking Anak Kurau in Batu Kurau to Kamunting, Dr Zambry said if the EPU gave its green light, Kamunting would be known as Greater Kamunting.

“A new industrial area will be created in Greater Kamunting, which will have spill over effect on Jalan Anak Kurau,” he added.

Earlier, Larut MP Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin, who was present at the event, announced a RM60,000 allocation to repair four bridges in the Batu Kurau area.

Batu Kurau assemblyman Kapt (Rtd) Datuk Mohd Hajmuddin Elias Al-Hafiz said some of the bridges had been in a sorry state over the last five months.

“It has caused difficulties to villagers who need the bridges to transport their produce from the farm,” he said.

Villagers are now using make-shift bridges to ferry their products, he added.
