World beauty queens to showcase batik outfits

KUALA LUMPUR: Fifty-six beauty queens from around the world will parade batik outfits designed by 20 local batik and fashion designers during the first International Batik Fashion Designers Competition here on Dec 22.

Deputy Tourism Minister Dr James Dawos Mamit said the competition, to be held at the Karyaneka Centre, is in conjunction with the Miss Tourism International 2011 World Final.

"The contest, collaborated by the Information, Communications and Culture Ministry and Karyaneka, is to promote hand-crafted products nationally and internationally.

"It's more than just a beauty pageant because, at the same time, we want to promote peace, goodwill and friendship among the delegates and also to share cultures and traditions, which is a part of the pageant's mission," he told a press conference on the Miss Tourism International 2011 World Final here yesterday.

The grand final, to be held at the Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa on Dec 31, is one of the major international events of D'Touch International Sdn Bhd with the support of the Tourism Ministry.
