AMPANG Point may be designated as a weekend cycling area. Ampang Jaya Municipal Council president Datuk Mohamad Yacob said the idea is to encourage the public to take up cycling.
"We are planning to adopt the same concept as in Jakarta where roads are cordoned off to allow cyclists to enjoy their ride within a stipulated period.
"We may try this out at Bukit Melawati when the neighbourhood is designated as a clean zone next month."
Mohamad, however, said the implementation of the plans would depend on the outcome of discussions with stakeholders, including the police.
He said the council's Youth and Community Department will take charge of the project.
"This cycling plan definitely needs public support to make it successful," said Mohamad.
Councillor Abdul Aziz Ahmad, at the council's full board meeting recently, said he hoped that the plan would be well received.
The MPAJ council hopes to turn Ampang Point into a zone for cyclists for a few hours every Saturday. |
On a different development, Mohamad said the state government was allocating RM2 million for road and drainage works for each of the five state constituencies.
"We have a list of the areas that need repair or upgrade works. We will discuss with the state assemblymen to determine which of the area or neighbourhood will get the fund first."
Mohamad said once that was decided, the council would carry out the works before claiming the amount from the state government.
"The budget for repairing drains in Lembah Jaya, however, is obtained separately and not through this fund.
"We are asking for about RM120,000 from the state's Economic Planning Unit."
