Woman in suicide bid saved after frantic call

Rescued in time: Firemen carrying the suicidal woman to a waiting ambulance in Penang yesterday
GEORGE TOWN: A distraught woman who had attempted suicide was saved by her quick-thinking parents, concerned neighbours and quick response from the rescue authorities.

She was believed to be alone in her 13th floor condominium unit near Universiti Sains Malaysia in Jalan Sungai Dua when she placed a frantic call to her parents at around 10pm.

Her parents quickly alerted the state Fire and Rescue Department after the woman, in her mid-30s, claimed she had slit her wrists before hanging up the phone.

Firemen arrived at the condominium within minutes after receiving the parents’ distress call.

Upon arriving, they saw some of the woman’s neighbours trying to calm her down, but she had locked herself inside the unit while yelling at the people to stay away.

The firemen waited for about 30 minutes while the neighbours continued pleading with the woman to let them help.

When the woman paused, the firemen seized the chance to force their way in.

They quickly surrounded her, bandaged her wrists and carried her to an ambulance to be rushed to Penang Hospital for treatment.
