Pahang education chief's name used in scam

KUANTAN, Pahang - The Pahang Education director lodged a police report claiming that members of a syndicate are using his name to offer tenders for cash.

Datuk Mazlan Mohamad (top photo) said those contacted were told of tenders for projects at various schools and that the money would ensure they got the projects.

He said they were also told to bank in the money into an account.

"I was shocked when my friend told me that several contractors from other districts also claimed to have received similar calls from individuals claiming to be 'Datuk Mazlan' and staff from the Education Department offering tenders.

"The scam is tarnishing my name and also the department's image," he said when met at his home here yesterday.

He said checks with other districts revealed that the syndicate had been active for the past three months but he was unaware if there was anyone who had fallen victim to the scam.

It is learnt that the bank account number provided belonged to a woman.

Mazlan urged the public not to be duped by the conmen as the department had never contacted or appointed anyone to offer projects.

"All matters involving tenders and projects will be only conducted at the department's office here through a meeting.

"I hope individuals, who have received similar calls, will come forward to lodge a report to facilitate police investigations."
