SERDANG: Claims of Malaysia doing business with Israel are being used to defend Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's close links with the Jewish state, said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"We have no diplomatic ties with Israel but the report is to ensure that Anwar is not being chided for his links with many people in Israel," he told a press conference.
Anwar came under heavy criticism for reportedly saying an interview with the Wall Street Journal that he supported “all efforts to protect the security of the state of Israel.”
In response to the criticisms, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) urged the Ministry of International Trade and Industry to reveal any alleged commercial dealings with Israel.
